Once they were blind, now they see. Patients cured by stem cell 'miracle'

Controversial medical breakthrough restores vision – now doctors hope to repeat the success
Steve Connor Author Biography

Tuesday 24 January 2012

Two blind people have shown signs of being able to see again – despite having incurable eye disease – following a revolutionary operation involving the transplant of stem cells derived from a human embryo.

A third patient, a Yorkshire man who volunteered to take part in a similar trial in Britain, had a similar transplant operation last week involving the injection of embryonic stem cells into the damaged retina at the back of the eye.

The three people are the first wave of patients to receive controversial transplants of embryonic cells as part of an ambitious attempt to treat a range of incurable diseases with stem cells that have the power to develop into any of the dozens of specialised tissues of the body.

The two American patients, who each received transplants in just one of their eyes last year, have not shown any signs of serious side effects, such as tissue rejection or the development of tumours, according to a study to be published later this week in The Lancet.

"if you go over there and remove that unborn human from that woman's womb, we can use some of the cells from his or her now dead body to restore your sight"

Barry, is it your opinion that the only source of stem cells is from aborted fetuses?

What about stillborn babies?

What about stem cells taken from the placenta or the umbilical cord?

Why is your rhetoric always so panic stricken and fearful and ignorant?

TVI

your article clearly reads

"stem cells derived from a human embryo"

not "placenta" or "umbilical cord"

restoring a persons sight by removing a human from the womb of his or her mother, and harvesting cells from the now dead body is no "miracle"

I'm positive the human embryo did not consent to the procedure....however, if you have a donor card signed by the embryo in question.....please post a link to it

It's truly sad that we're not allowed to do more (in the US) with stem cell research.

I see nothing wrong with having women and men volunteer to donate eggs and sperm for the sole purpose of in vitro fertilization to create embryos to be stem cell donors. The embryos could never exist to term outside the womb.

Let's get past all the religulous bs and start helping the living.

who cares if they are coming from living fetis's.
this planet doesn't need anymore babies right now anyways.

objecting to creating humans to use as a source of spare parts for others, has nothing to do with religion

I wonder how the supporters of the idea would feel if they were being targeted as donors, instead of recipients

you are human....is it ok for someone to take your body parts from you against your will

The Catholic Church supports the use of placental, umbilical cord and adult stem cells for cures.

Placental and umbilical cord stem cells are embryonic stem cells that can be gathered without destroying a human embryo. Such a destruction would be the taking of a human life. There is no reason to grow humans for "spare parts".
