AK - Go back and read what I wrote. I said that it doesn't matter how good a parent you are, kids will do stupid things - like making a baby before they're ready. That was not a contradiction to anything else I said.

I believe in personal responsibility - and when everything else is stripped away, the two people who make a baby are responsible.

You must remember that I was born and raised in the Bible belt, and although my parents aren't evangelicals, they were both raised in evangelical families. My oldest aunt and her husband have an evangelical radio program on Sunday mornings. You can't toss a rock at a family reunion without hitting a preacher or organist or Sunday school teacher. If anyone but my Catholic aunt says grace, we know the potatoes are gonna get cold before we all get our plates, because they can't say "thank you for the food" without giving a sermon.

None of their churches are Assemblies of God - but the one attended by my Dad's family was very close in beliefs.

Palin belongs to an Assembly of God church (think, Pentecostal, Dominionist, Third Wave movement, speaking in tongues, driving out demons, etc etc) . They don't believe in making birth control available to anyone who is not married. Teaching your kid about any form of birth control is considered by the church to be a sin. Teenagers are encouraged to sign a purity vow, affirming that they will be virgins until they are married (and no, I don't know if Palin's daughter signed the vow or not)

So, either Sarah Palin said "I believe in teaching abstinence only" in public and sinned by teaching her daughter about condoms in private, or she didn't teach her daughter about condoms.

Maybe you're right, maybe she did tell her something in private different from what she says publicly - she wouldn't be the first.

But don't say I blamed her for her daughter's pregnancy, because that's simply not true.

IMHO, Palin's daughter seems to be more in touch with reality than she is. She even says, "Abstinence only education isn't realistic" She and her boyfriend took a chance, now they're paying the consequences. They've picked a hard row to hoe, and I hope for the baby's sake they're up to it.

"We come into the world and take our chances
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That's the way that lady luck dances
Roll the bones...."

It's not that Sarah Palin COULDN'T teach her daughter what a condom is - it's that she DIDN'T.

Kestrel sweetie, the only way I can interpret that sentence is that you're blaming Mrs Palin for her daughter's pregnancy. Her daughter became pregnant and you had a knee jerk reaction in assuming she didn't teach her daughter about birth control.

I don't care HOW good a parent you are, or how well you teach your children right from wrong, they are going to screw up a few times.

In this sentence you're putting the responsibility on the kids and not Sarah Palin. I'm sorry but the two points you made contradict one another.

Not every Assembly of God church is going to have the same teachings. The Catholic church for instance, is pro-life. Does that mean every Catholic is pro-life? No. Does that mean every priest and nun are pro-life? No. I have a very close friend who's Catholic and is pro-choice (in fact I think he even voted for Obama!!!). Also the Catholic church is (supposedly) against birth control but another friend who's wife is Catholic told me she was never against using it. There are very conservative Lutheran churches as well as liberal Lutheran churches. In fact I would bet that there are just as many differences amongst protestant churches of the same sect (be it Lutheran, Evenjelical, AoG etc...) as there are in Catholic churches.

But.....

Sometimes I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
and the next thing it's rolling over me

AK - So you're thinking that maybe the Wassilla Assemblies of God is more amenable to giving birth control to minors?

Have you actually READ anything about the Wassilla Assemblies of God? You should.

In the years I've known you, I can't remember if we've ever talked about religion on a personal level, so I don't know if you've had much experience with fundamentalists. But trust me - with pre-marital sex, particularly among teenagers, there is no wiggle room as far as they're concerned. Virgin or married - anything else requires repentance and begging forgiveness. And if you planned beforehand "just in case" with birth control, you were planning to commit sin, and that's MUCH worse than giving in to temptation at the last minute. This isn't like the issue of whether women should be allowed to teach men or to cut their hair or wear makeup and pants. This is a basic tenet of their belief system.

When Bristol and Sarah Palin were on Oprah (the interview where Bristol took her purity vow, albeit a little late), Palin herself said she wished she'd had more candid talks with her daughter about having premarital sex. Even SHE recognized that a little more information might have come in handy (although, in the end, especially with teenagers, hormones often trump common sense)

It would also have been nice if Levi had had sense enough to put a half dollar into a condom machine or something, but teenage boys aren't exactly the most responsible creatures on the planet.

And, whether you took my comment as intended or not, I'm telling you, as the source of the comment, there was no contradiction. It all comes down to personal responsibility.
