Meanwhile, back in Iran, on July 17th tens of thousands of protesters turn out. It is clear that there is a split within the ruling theocracy as one of Iran's most influential clerics, Hojatoleslam Rafsanjani, openly defies an embattled Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in calling for the release of detained pro-democracy protesters.
Ayatollah Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad are having difficulties holding on to power.
The US news media should not ignore this and the administration should refuse to acknowledge President Ahmadinejad.
