So I decided to pry open the boards I placed on my mom's basement door and let myself outside for the first time in a couple years and see what this whole "RL" thing that everyone's been talking about is all about.
Day 1
I was told you level up once a year, so I'm level 21 right now, not bad. I couldn't figure out exactly what my skills were, though...so that's one strike against the UI.
I take a quick look around the house and check all the drawers to see if the devs put any items or money there. I found a couple knives, but no swords. I guess I need to stick with Thief for now.
I passed by my mom and tried to initiate a conversation. She told me I needed to take a shower and get a job. I asked what difficulty those quests were and what the rewards were. She stopped talking to me at that point so I can only assume this quest is still bugged.
I decided to go outside and grind some exp. The environment looked better than expected and I wasn't getting any video lag. Lighting and dynamic shadows were pretty good too.
I spotted a cat and decided that I should start with something EP. I pulled out a knife and headed towards it but it ran away. Guess I'm too high level for it.
A couple of teenagers were walking down the street, so I figured they'd be DC at best and I could handle two. I sneaked up behind the guy (since I figured he'd be stronger than the girl) and SA'ed him in the back. It worked pretty well, since he went down fast. The girl started screaming but I was able to sap her before she got too far away...don't need any guards coming. A couple quick slashes and she was down too. Difficulty level isn't so bad and it's pretty interactive.
I looted the bodies and got a pack of gum, a couple rubber bands, a Disturbed CD and a ball-point pen...guess I can fix a car engine or something, lol. I also found $44.38 so I decided to go to a store and try to get a better weapon.
I only made it a few blocks before I was suddenly aggroed by, like, 4 guards...WTF. I tried to sap one but he kicked me and then another one tasered me which stunned me for a couple minutes!!! Can we say "overpowered" much?! What kind of game is this where they throw 4 IT+++ guards at you within 6 minutes from the starting zone?
Anyways, now I'm stuck grinding in jail for a while. This is totally lame.
Conclusion: Even by FFXI's standards, RL is just way too hard. I wouldn't bother with it. Graphics and interactivity mean nothing when it's just a constant grind and high-level mobs.
