okies, just wandering if anyone has had some experience with this, i know i am in Oz but we are not able to access the education department system for home schooling till Feb, as this term is nearly over.
i am going slowly nuts and its only been 2 weeks, but that said, too see my child eating again coz He is not gettting so bullied or misunderstood is worth everything *S

i would love any ideas, sites to go too, anyone done this? doing this? i dont mean only with a special needs child, any child *S i found a couple of sites with worksheets etc..i think i am just * eye tired * smiles softly .

He is 14, but works at a 9- 10 year old level, but boy its alot harder than i thought !!
so much stuff i am finding is aimed at preschool level, i rekon there has to be some who are home schooled at this age?

thanks *G

maiden,

it is interesting that you posted this.. i was thinking of posting something about home schooling as well... i am looking at taking my oldest out of school and home schooling her, but want to get all the info that i could first and see if anyone here ehad any experience with it.

also, i am not sure how things will differ from our locations... but fa found a great site for me for my state... and well she is the best researcher i have ever met... that woman can find info on anything...truly amazing.

anyway, here is the site you may want to look at it, as i know it has a section on home schooling older children and special needs as well.

http://www.thsc.org/defaultpage.asp

hope this helps, and if you want page me and maybe we can go through this maze together ~l and hugs~Laughter is timeless, Imagination has no age, and Dreams are forever.....

My brothers and I were all homeschooled for at least 4 grades throughout school. Infact, right now I'm helping My youngest brother finish his studying so he can catch up and take his GED since My parents slacked off the last year.

I'll get the links I've been using together and post 'em here for ya'll. -s-

maiden...i don't know the OZ system...but in our systems here in Alberta, there is a Home Schooling Coordinator who will help with curriculum and materials. Barring that, if you've taken you son out because the school cannot keep him safe and happy, they could provide lesson plans until Feb when you can hook up...Barring that...the school should have course requirements for the core subjects...and if you can incorporate those into his every day activities, it doesn't have to look like sitting at the kitchen table for hours on end...

I think if you can find a way to enjoy each other in a learning capacity not offered in a classroom - field trips, life skills, fun together - at least until you can get more formally hooked up... that will serve him better than sheets or math or whatever...and be easier on you...and perhaps also provide some of that healing time from what sounds like a pretty traumatic school experience.

Good luck, sweetness

Newbie

NewbieNewbieNewbieNewbieNewbieNewbieNewbieNewbie

I rarely post, but I recently embarked on homeschooling my oldest. She is 12 and a half. I don;t have the time myself to work on it, so I was fortunate enough to find a local private school that does schooling through the internet. They have a physical location, but my daughter will be schooled through the computer. They send me the classes via the mail in the form of software. She opens her weekly lesson plan and clicks on the lesson and a video opens and a teacher then teaches her. She answers some questions to make sure understands the lesson and moves on. Her grades are then uploaded to the school via the internet. If she has questions, or me for that fact, she has a teacher she can call at the school during school hours.
It's a work at your own pace program. So for children that need more time than others it is truley beneficial. For my daughter it for the opposite reason. She works faster than the school system here so it is providing the challenge she needs. The local school here said that if she chooses to come back into the local system then she will enter at the level she tests at. She can go through school faster and get her degree sooner or stay at the level she wishes.
At first, I thought there is no way I could afford this, but fortunately...it was $300 to start and $35.00 month for the duration of the school year. The books and what not for traditional home schooling is more than that.
Now, I know you are in Australia and I have no idea if this has reached there, but I am sure it is on it's way. I cann see that alot of school will eventually start to pick up on this. This is a private school, so perhaps you can talk to parents with kids in the private school system or look there. I found out because a woman I know has her son doing it. He has been retained twice in the 7th grade. She started him this year in the 7th grade for the third time, but since it is work at his pace, he is doing quite well. And she loves it because, she does not have to be frustrated with arguing with him over school work and what not. He has a teacher to call with problems. She does no more work that what he would do if he had homework.

Did any of you end up deciding to homeschool?

We've been homeschooling parents from 2nd-7th grade (current year) so if anyone is still interested, let us know. Also, I've written for online educational companies so I can give advice and tips for any who are looking to homeschool secularly.
