ok so i have sat and read all this and thought it over even talked about it with my childs therpists and reps with the school and such. i like to be prepared after all, so i firgured i would offer my two cents.

my oldest if going into first grade next year, she is a typically developing child. as things stand at school this year, i or her father walk her to class everyday, and yes... at times she does hold our hand. she is a shy girl and likes that contact to reassure her all is well. with that said, i will say this as well. i have every intention to keep our routine next year and will continue to do so till she is 40 if need be. she is my child, not the school's child and if she needs that type of reassurance then i will give it to her... the school be damned. now remember this is just a typically developing child... if this were my non typical developing daughter, i would be just as adamant.

i have always been a very involved parent when it comes to school and all i hear from my childrens teachers is how grateful they are that i do get involved.. that i do care what is happening in the classroom. for there are so many parents who treat it as the schools problem. that the teachers should handle everything that takes place there and not bother the parents with it. now just as there are parents that can't be bothered it is sad to say there are teachers that are the same way. as are there therapists etc....

in Texas IEP's are called ARD's. and there is a reason that every parents dreads ARD's, there is a reason the parents search for adovocates to come with them to ARD's, and there is a reason the groups like the commission for the blind are around to help with these things as well. genrally speaking the schools rarely do what is the the childs best interest. be it due to a lack of funding or personel. the teachers are so outnumbered by the sheer number of students and this is even more present in a special education classroom.

things like this are the very reason that parents sue school districts, and why there is such a thing as the americans with disabilities act. none of us know it all when it comes to our kids.. not the teachers, not the schools, not the therapists, and not the doctors. we all make our best guesses and work from there...but at the end of the day it is the parents..that are the ones that know their children best, and that should count for far more than what a school district deems as appropriate.

nixie here as my best words of advice for you.. never foget that you know your child better than they could ever hope to. try to find yourself an advocate.. most groups for the disabled have them or at the very least can help you find one... try to find a Wright's law session.. sometimes they are called bootcamps or seminars.. they deal specifically with the laws regarding the disabled and their rights within the law. and if still you need more... find and attorney. there are many that do pro bono work for the diabled and they will happily help you with your battle against the school system.

i know for myself that as i am gearing up for my non typical child to enter the public school system there are many things that i worry about...enough to where i am considering home schooling so i do not have to deal with all the problems that come from the school districts. the other option that i am considering and you may want to look into is called a charter school... they are for disabled children and they teach them in a way that most parents find more appropriate than the public school systems way.

Keaghan- to you i would say this. in a perfect world i would agree that the team would be able to get together and make the best decision for the child. sadly this is not a perfect world and far to often everyone is looking out for their own best interest. be it the therapists who want to get paid by the insurance company, or the school that wants to get paid by the government... so most times it is us parents that are out there fighting the good fight and getting paid only by the satisfaction of knowing we are doing all we can to get the best of everything for our children.....Laughter is timeless, Imagination has no age, and Dreams are forever.....

What would you give a man who could make your deepest dreams come true?
