Hi Crosswings ... I personally use Paint Shop Pro for the
static part of my icon, if it needs animation, I will use
either Animation 3 by Jasc, or Ulead Gif Animator, or a
combination of both.

The first thing in icon making is to be sure after finding
the image you want to work with, that it is cut properly.
For The Pork, our size is a maximum of 140 x 140 and
up to 65 K.

To get that square, you need to start with a square, perhaps
250 x 250 then resize down.

You will be able to search the net for tutorials and videos that
walk you through something you want to learn. Or, you can
ask other icon makers questions. When I first started, I made
sure I understood the tools of the program, and by trial and
error, I found techniques that were pleasing to my eyes.

Something I find important is that an icon maker needs to
develop their own technique, rather then just copy what
others do.

I hope this helps, if you have specific questions, that I might
be able to help you wish, feel free to email me at
graphics@the-pork.com .
