One of the most understated and puzzling subplots of 52 was Ralph Dibny's journey with the Helmet of Nabu on a quest to resurrect his wife. This issue ended the plot in a big way, and huge ramifications for the DC world of magic. Best of all, it was Ralph back on top, doing what he does best. Why is it that everyone forgets he's the world's (second) greatest detective?

Definitely a highlight issue of 52. If you can't afford the whole shebang, this is at least one issue not to miss.

I'm not sure of his reasons, but this is what happened as far as I can tell:

Ralph Dibny used the wish gun on himself and made the wish, "I want to be with Sue."

From that moment on, Ralph knew that -everything- that happened to him would move him toward the goal of his wish. He knew that the Helmet of Fate was secretly Felix Faust the whole time. He let Faust think that he was trying to bring Sue back from the dead, but what he really intended was something far grander; to trap Faust and Neron in an inescapable prison, then enrage Neron into killing him (Ralph), thus eliminating their only means of escape.

So when Ralph wished that he wanted to be with Sue, he meant that he wanted to die, not that he wanted Sue to live again.

I love it when writers show off the detective skills of characters like Batman, Ralph Dibny, Detective Chimp, etc. It just highlights why they're held in such high regard by their peers.
